My more traditional Chinese painting studies make use of the yin zhang chop tradition, which expects the artist to affix a chop or stamp to a work upon completion. The chop marks it as the artist’s own and a mood chop is often used to help impart additional conceptual meaning to the piece itself.
As you can see, I have a few different mood chops (the chop markings with symbolic sayings).
The carved stone chop is pressed into a special ink paste, sometimes made from silk fibers mixed with oil and vermilion. Other times, and most commonly, the paste is made from vegetable materials, mixed with oil and pigment.
I got my tin of ink paste in San Francisco Chinatown in 1996 and I am still using it! It lasts forever and is rich and powerful.
